MacDowell Preparatory Academy (“MacDowell”) is a K-8 public charter school serving children in the heart of Detroit’s northwest side. Established in 1924, today, MacDowell proudly serves over 350 scholars. The MacDowell Board is committed to its vision of MPA scholars maximizing their potential and achieving success in every area of their lives.
Over 90% of our scholars live within a 1.5 mile radius of the school. This, along with right-sized enrollment and manageable class sizes, creates a close-knit community where scholars feel safe and are able to develop meaningful relationships with adults
The importance of a college education is rapidly increasing in the 21st-century. As part of our enduring commitment to creating opportunities for our students, as we offer college prep curriculum.
Of course, the academic skills necessary to succeed are central to our program. We also prioritize a holistic approach to learning by purposefully integrating character development and cultivating a scholar’s sense of self. Each aspect is critical to developing happy, stable and successful human beings.
During the school day, we offer music and financial literacy classes as part of our core curriculum, and we partner with community organizations to offer after-school enrichment and athletic programming such as RacquetUp Detroit.
MacDowell operationalizes its vision through its mission to instill in its scholars the SKILL and WILL to prepare them for success in college and life.
We believe that each student is important and valued, in offering structure and guidance for every child, in transparency and integrity, in providing leadership opportunities for the staff and students, in fostering good, healthy reciprocal relationships, in student, school and community engagement and in providing an environment where children are fully supported and feel comfortable opening up.
Come to school excited about their future and own their own learning. They will maximize their potential and achieve success in every area of their lives.
Passionate, knowledgeable and accountable for creating an environment where scholars enthusiastically learn.
Actively supporting our children’s dreams and the work of our school.
The MacDowell Board of Directors is a diverse collection of professionals from the business, policy, and education sectors who are all committed to ensuring an excellent education for MacDowell scholars.
